UofT Magazine

Autumn 2011 issue. I had the opportunity to work on the layout and design of the alumni magazine for the University of Toronto.

Illustration for the cover and feature story, Mind Games, was done by the Heads of State. Photography for Marshall’s Laws was provided by the Estate of Marshall McLuhan; and Henri Daumain, for Life Magazine. All other photography was commissioned or stock (not taken by myself).

DURHAM COLLEGE WEBSITE REDESIGN
During my time spent working...

DURHAM COLLEGE WEBSITE REDESIGN

During my time spent working at Durham College in the Communications+Marketing department, as well as a freelance designer, I designed the interfaces for the redesign of the colleges website. I was responsible for creating mockups for the home page, a sample of a program page, subpage templates, super menu designs, icons, buttons, sidebar ads and main page slider images (created as photoshop templates so content could be edited in house), and setting up stylesheets which followed the brand standards for the developers.

The goal of the redesign was to incorporate more multimedia on the home page, creating a dynamic, interactive marketing and recruitment tool. Features included social media, with the ability to toggle in between Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, program videos featured prominently on program pages and the ability to highlight images and videos in super menus.

This project was a year in the making and the result is a website that is cleaner, more organized, easier to navigate and strongly communicates the Durham College brand. View the live site here.

This project won an Award of Excellence as a part of the 2011 RGD Student Awards and has been featured on The Lovely Package, Design;Defined and Graphic Birdwatching!

The goal of this project was to select an existing brand and redesign their identity for a series of 3 packages that changed based on 3 different flavours. Crumbs Bake Shop was chosen and packages for their Candy, Smores and Brownie cupcake flavours were created. The boxes use colours that coordinate with the cupcake they house, this helps distinguish the various flavours to employees and customers. The boxes are made of recycled paper so they’re more green than the existing plastic containers. Trays were also designed to fit in the boxes so the cupcakes didn’t topple while inside the box.

CANADIAN WINTER SURVIVAL KIT

This project was won an Award of Excellence as a part of the 2011 RGD Student Awards, was selected as a winner in the 2011 Applied Arts Student Awards and has been featured on The Dieline, NOTCOT, Yahoo!
The goal of this project was to design a fictional kit that needed to be assembled. The idea of a Canadian Winter Survival Kit was born and the logo, labels and packaging were designed.

The kit contains a pair of wool socks, a lift ticket, a condom, 3 bottles of beer, 3 bottles of Screech and an instruction card. The instruction card was designed to accomodate the lift ticket, which slips into a sleeve to hold it in place, and the “convelope” which houses the condom is affixed to the front of the sleeve. This card then slides into the box.

Each label features a hand drawn illustration that changes based on the item. A lumberjack for the socks, deer antlers for the condom, a snowflake for the lift ticket, a maple leaf for the beer bottles and a cod fish for the screech bottles. A red and black plaid pattern was used throughout the project to tie the separate items together and serve as a reminder of Canadiana.

MOOKIES

MOOKIES

This project won an Applied Arts award and an RGD Award of Excellence.

The goal of this project was to design a package that would sell two products that are typically used together. Milk and cookies were chosen, and Mookies was born. My solution features a double sided design, one side for the milk and one side for the cookies. The logo on each side changes based on what it represents, and the logo extends from the box to the bottle. The bottle toppers also serve as a visual representation of which product they house, featuring the same icon used on the front of the box, as well as typographically on the label that extends down onto the bottle.

A microsite, brochure and poster were designed to promote travel to the city of Portland, Oregon. The brochure and microsite are split into sections (weather, shopping, dining, attractions, transportation, accommodations and nature), each section had an “icon” that corresponded to the content. These icons make up the navigation on the microsite and are also featured on the poster. The microsite serves as an online version of the print brochure and would be linked to from their main site. Bright colours, simple illustrations that reflect the best of Portland and photography that showcases the beauty of the Pacific Northwest are used to promote the destination.

The logo, letterhead, envelope, business card and postcard were created for this ficticious type foundry. The postcard would be used to thank customers for their orders or to hand out at tradeshows. The design reflects the vintage qualities of the days of letterpress printing, and old wood type blocks.

DURHAM COLLEGE

Various projects completed while working in the Communications + Marketing department.

Twitter branding

I designed a custom background for Durham College’s twitter profile, to refresh the branding and to bring it more in line with the redesign of the college’s website. Bottom image is the previous background (not my work).

Youtube channel branding

I designed a custom background for Durham College’s Youtube channel, to refresh the branding and to bring it more in line with the redesign of the college’s website. Bottom image is the previous background (not my work).

CTS Website

Following a redesign of their sub brand, Corporate Training Services (associated with Durham College) needed a new website to match their new brand standards. View finished website here.

Student Services Building Grand Opening

Plaque
As the lead designer for the Grand Opening of the Student Services Building, I designed a standardized plaque that will be used in new buildings built on campus going forward.
